We are pleased to announce that we have added another full time instructor
the Whistler list. Mr.Jacques Bourgouin L.I.S.T.D. (Cecchetti Branch) will
be joining us and doing some exciting classes that all Highland dancers will
enjoy.

Jacques was born and raised in Winnipeg, Jacques did most of his dance
training at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet where he graduated from their
Professional Division Program in 1988. He went on to tour with the company
in the production of “The Nutcracker“ which toured across Canada and “Romeo
and Juliet” which toured the former Soviet Union. He was also invited back
to dance in the school’s 25th Anniversary Production of “Don Q”. Jacques has
also performed with and choreographed for “Le Cercle Moliere”, and danced
and toured extensively with L’ensemble Folklorique de la Riviere-Rouge, both
from Winnipeg.

After moving back to Winnipeg, Jacques completed his teacher training in the
Cecchetti method with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. In Edmonton, he has
performed with Ballet North and Northern Light Theatre before taking up
teaching.

Now residing in Edmonton, Jacques is co-owner of the Strathcona School of
Dancing and a teacher at The Edmonton School of Ballet. He was ballet master
and choreographer for the Edmonton Festival Ballet Company from 1997 until
2002. He has choreographed for the official change-over ceremony of Bonnie
Doon School to L’Academie Vimy Ridge Academy, choreographed the men’s
variation for the Pulcinella Suite which was performed with the Edmonton
Symphony and worked on the opening ceremonies for the Canadian 2000
Championship Series of Highland Dancing held in Edmonton where the New Dress
Alberta Tartan was presented to the whole world. He has worked with the
Edmonton Opera, restaging “Aida’s” dance section and danced in “La
Traviata”. He restaged “The Graduation Ball” for The Edmonton School of
Ballet in honor of the first Graduating Class of L’Academie Vimy Ridge
Academy.

Jacques has trained in all three major ballet syllabi, Vaganova, R.A.D. and
Cecchetti. Teaches Ballet, Pas de Deux, Repertoire, Tap, Jazz and Step
Dancing. He is an examiner for the Edmonton School of Ballet “Junior Grades”
program. He also enjoys adjudicating dance festivals such as the Prince
George Dance Festival in 2003, Yellowhead Rotary Arts Festival in Hinton
April 2005 and several others.

CLASSES FOR DANCERS

Dancers of all levels, including Beginner, Novice, Intermediate, Premier, Championship and Recreational categories are welcome.

  • Classes will be designed to give each dancer the maximum amount of attention and correction possible. Each actual dance group will be small and the dancers will rotate around all the available teachers.
  • Dancers may choose between the competitive groups and the recreational stream.
  • Dance class time schedules will be posted on this website in lots of time to enable participants to choose their class courses well in advance of arrival at Whistler.
  • Competitive classes will concentrate on the competitive dancers with an emphasis on what will quickly improve their overall performance level. It will include some psychology sessions to assist in the dancers understanding of preparation for competition and championships and some crossover classes such as "ballet for Highland" that will assist in muscle development and flexibility.
  • The recreational dance classes will concentrate on the less technical aspects of Highland i.e. old-time steps, solo and group choreography, ceilidh dances, cardio workouts

 CLASSES FOR TEACHERS
  • Teachers may attend any of the classes for dancers (time permitting) as well several others classes speficially designed for teachers i.e. teaching beginner and primary dancers, how to improve a dancer from good to excellent, new solo and group dances, etc. Watch this website for further details.
CLASSES FOR JUDGES
  • A special session will be offered on both July 8th and 9th (each session different, at least two hours each day) for people who plan to take the SOBHD Adjudicator's exam. "How to Study for the Judges Exam" should be a must for anyone wishing to become an Official Board Adjudicator.
  • For judges in general "How I Judge" (judging methodology) should assist you make the best decisions.

CLASSES FOR PARENTS AND ADULTS
  • Classes will be offered such as, "How to Score" (both manually and by computer), How to prepare for a trip to Scotland", What are the Rules and Regulations for Costumes", "Penalities in dances", the "Ins and Outs of the Scottish Official Board -its rules and regulations for dancers of all categories and for judges too.
